ABOUT SNOHOMISH, WA

Snohomish City is a city in and is the namesake town of Snohomish County in Washington State. Known for its lush natural beauty and its acres upon acres of rural farmland, it has long been popular among families and people who live for the great outdoors. For many, it’s the perfect mix of country and city: it’s about 45 minutes from Seattle to the south but still has spades of space to offer, affordable housing, and that cozy small-town feel. There’s plenty of parks, recreational areas, and trails and back roads that pass by the gorgeous local farms. With 12 constituent neighborhoods and 10,185 people, it stands as the 91st largest community in Washington.

Fun Fact #1: Snohomians have a local version of Groundhog Day on February 2nd called Ground Frog Day, when local celebrity “Snohomish Slew” – frognosticator extraordinaire – makes his annual weather prediction.

While a small town in all respects, Snohomish is hardly “small” with its total area of 3.6 mi², a good portion covered by forests and farmlands. The rural landscape shapes much of the local industry and the nature of recreational spaces in the region. For one, U-Pick farms like Mountainview Blueberry Farm and The Farm at Swans Trail are popular destinations for families, friends, and couples from all over the state who come in droves toward the Fall, when these local delicacies are ripe for the picking. Those looking for more excitement usually go to Bob’s Corn and Pumpkin Farm and try to conquer the infamous 10-acre Corn Maze, and have fun picking pumpkins afterward.

Fun Fact #2: There are several haunted establishments across Snohomish, the most popular of which are the Oxford Saloon and the Cabbage Patch Restaurant – both of which still serve customers today!

While the aphorism “small town, big heart” still rings true for the city, its increasingly bustling downtown is by no means deprived of any amenities or places of interest. In fact, you’ll find plenty of interesting things downtown, especially around 1st Street, which gave Snohomish the title “Antique Capital of the Northwest.” Here, you’ll find various shops like Star Center Antique Mall that sell all manner of vintage knickknacks, antiques, and curios, from old shop signs, rare collectors’ items, and picker-worthy collectibles over a hundred years old. And it’s not just antique goods, too. Snohomish is also home to several old Victorian-style houses, some of which are made available to tour, usually around the summer.

Fun Fact #3: Snohomish used to be the county seat some 100 years ago. Rumor has it that one dreary night in 1896, a group of men on horse and buggy came from Everett, raided the county courthouse, and stole all records, making Everett the official county seat after that.

But the real fun doesn’t even start until after you’ve left downtown. The most adventurous sorts head to Harvey Airfield and tap Skydive Snohomish to take them on a tandem skydiving session: 13,000 feet minimum! But if you’re not a fan of that kind of exhilaration, you can still enjoy the view from high up in one of Snohomish Balloon Rides’ hot-air balloon tours. If you prefer your excitement on the ground, there’s always the Snohomish Golf Course where you can take on some birdies, and the Snohomish Aquatic Center if you like doing breaststrokes instead.

Fun Fact #4: Snohomish is home to baseball Hall-of-Famer Earl Averill, whose estate donated a big patch of land as a playing field in the middle of the city, where Snohomish Skatepark now stands.

As demographics go, Snohomish residents are relatively well-educated and affluent up-and-coming families with an average income of $66,209 annually. That being said, the cost of living here is 44.6% higher than the U.S. average. The city’s ethnicity is predominantly White, but its Latino and Asian communities have shown steady growth over the last decade. Meanwhile, roughly half of Snohomish homes are older, built around 1970-1999, though new construction has been picking up, especially in recent years. Most homes in Snohomish are detached single-family homes with 2 to 3 bedrooms, though apartment buildings and complexes are fairly common dwellings. The average cost of real estate stands at $455,138. Investors looking to grow some equity would be pleased to find that home appreciation rates are at an all-time high, up 118% from their values in 2000.
